§ 15.08.040. Licensing of electricians

  • A. No person, firm or corporation shall engage in the business of installing, altering, repairing or replacing electrical wiring, except for the maintenance of neon signs, without first having obtained a license therefor as herein provided.

    B. All applications shall be made to the electrical inspector.

    C. A master electrician license or electrical contractor license shall be issued to the applicant upon payment of a license fee of sixty dollars ($60.00) for the first license, and thirty dollars ($30.00) for the renewal license every year thereafter.

    D. A journeyman electrician license fee shall be thirty dollars ($30.00) for the first license, and fifteen dollars ($15.00) for the renewal license every year after.

    E. All such licenses shall be valid and extend until the last day of December following the date of issuance of license. Such license shall be nontransferable and shall cover only the work performed and installed by the holder thereof.

    F. An electrician or electrical contractor shall, before engaging in business in the city, secure an annual license from the city clerk. Such license shall not be issued until the applicant therefor shall procure and maintain a liability insurance policy in the amount of one hundred thousand dollars ($100,000.00) for the death or injury of any one person and three hundred thousand dollars ($300,000.00) for the death or injury of any number of persons in any one accident and fifty thousand dollars ($50,000.00) for property damages in any one accident. Such policies of insurance shall be issued by some insurance company authorized to do business in the state of Kansas. Such person may qualify as to the insurance requirements by filing a certificate with the city clerk executed by the resident agent of such company stating that the required policy of insurance has been issued by such company for the purpose required by this chapter and that such insurer will not cancel the policy except upon giving thirty (30) days' notice in writing to the city; and that the certificate shall be filed for an annual period beginning January 1st and ending December 31st of such year, or in lieu of insurance the city clerk may accept a good and sufficient bond in the sum of two thousand five hundred dollars ($2,500.00) conditioned that he or she will comply with all ordinances and regulations of the city as herein provided and with any special requirements of the superintendent of the electrical department of the city, and conditioned further, that the city or any other person who may deem himself or herself injured or damaged by the principal's failure to comply with the provisions of this chapter may sue on such bond to recover his or her damage. All such bonds shall be approved by the city manager before a license is issued; provided, that no such bond shall be required of any person in the employ of the city electrical department who shall perform electrical wiring work under the direction of the superintendent of the electrical department.

    G. No person, firm or corporation shall engage in the business of installing, altering or repairing electrical wiring or materials unless the performance of such electrical work is under the supervision of a master electrician; or the owner of a single-family residence, who resides in same, may wire one circuit providing the owner obtains a permit and follows all rules of the inspection and electric departments of the city. A journeyman electrician shall be permitted to work on any job, but an apprentice or helper shall be accompanied and supervised by the master or journeyman electrician.
